Sendero GPS V4.2 Changes, December 18, 2007

Sendero GPS version 4.2 contains a range of software enhancements. There are no map or POI updates in this version. Version 4 maps and POIs will work with 4.2. After only 5 months of development, Sendero has implemented 20 more GPS software improvements. This is the ninth GPS version released over the past eight years in addition to our first maps-only product called Way To Go. Please read other documents for a complete understanding of the Sendero GPS software for the BrailleNote including the User Manual, the audio tutorial and the optional GPS CourseWare. For a Keysoft compatibility list, see the ReadMe document.

Note: Version 4.0 and above works on all BrailleNote mPower and PK models. 4.0 is not compatible with BrailleNote Classic models. Version 3.5 is the latest version for the BrailleNote Classic models.

  1. Speed of Route calculation is much faster: A new Rich Map Engine reduces the time to calculate a route by 20% or more.
  2. There is a new deCarta Rich Map Engine for overall enhanced route handling.
  3. Pedestrian route calculation has been improved.
  4. You can now hear an automatic announcement when the street name, city or state/province changes. This option can be switched on and off within the LookAround menu with Space MS on the BT and Read MS on the QT.
  5. F for Find has been added to the Multiple Repeat list in order to repeat the search for the nearest point of interest. Use this when you are in a sparsely populated area and want more frequent updates as to the nearby points of interest.
  6. New Rich POI content. Sendero GPS now has the ability to create audio files and to associate audio and text files with a POI. If you wish to record a Point of Interest as a voice file in addition to giving it a text name, use the record button on your PDA to do this. When someone reads you the menu in a restaurant or when you look up a menu online, associate that recording or file with the Sendero GPS. Use the Space P or Read P to access the Rich POI content. A special beep will alert you that there is Rich Media associated with a particuar POI. User sharing of Rich Media is also possible. A Rich Media category has been added to the POI category list.
  7. Route directions can now be saved to a file for better ease of printing and sharing with other users.
  8. If your Virtual position isn't already set, it is automatically set to the state capital of the map you have loaded. You are given a list if multiple states are loaded. You can also use Backspace with V on the BT or CONTROL with V on the QT to manually set the Virtual position by state.
  9. In Address Matching, the items in the street field now indicate their distance and direction relative to you. If you know the approximate distance to the street you are looking for, this information will be useful.
  10. Under left/right heading orientation, the terms have been modified so you now hear slight right and slight left.
  11. There is a new combination heading orientation that uses left, right, ahead and behind for the direct headings and the clock face for the angled headings in between.
  12. The Route Settings commands from version 4 have been moved to Route Management in the 4.2 Help menus.
  13. The GPS receiver type is now a menu list rather than a hot key list for more convenient access.
  14. Set both the destination and virtual positions at the same time with one keystroke. At a POI, use ENTER with B on the BT keyboard and Read with 2 on the QT keyboard. Or, after an address match, type B for both.
  15. GPS Headings are smoothed out somewhat with three presets. Go to the GPS Options menu and select Heading Averaging. The Default is Automatic which attempts to use the best averaging depending upon your speed of travel. If you know you are in a wide open area and wish to have your heading change instantly, choose the instantaneous setting by pressing I. In big city urban canyon situations, press C for the City option. As described in the GPS accuracy document, there are many factors that impact GPS accuracy and heading. You should study this document carefully.
  16. 16. Manually force a GPS heading by pressing Enter with H on the BT or Read H on the QT. You can choose from 8 cardinal directions or force the heading by the number of degrees from 1 to 360. You would use this feature when you come out of a subway for example and the GPS reports either an Unknown or incorrect heading orientation. If you know the compass direction you are facing, then use this command to force the GPS to report that direction. In this way, everything relative to your position becomes in sync. Once you have a GPS fix and have traveled in a constant direction for 5 seconds or so, the GPS heading will replace the manual heading you entered. You can always enter the manual heading again understanding that the GPS will take over shortly.
  17. The Sendero software is now smarter about when you have a Bluetooth receiver turned on or not and will prompt you what to do.
  18. When you reach a route destination, the route will be automatically closed. You will not be prompted to save the route. Remember when you create a long or customized route to save that route manually.
  19. The Complex Intersection POI category has been renamed Intersection. Use this to categorize user points such as audible signal lights, path intersections between parks and roads and other important pedestrian features. Record a POI at an intersection with details such as where the push button is located and how the islands are situated.
  20. A small number of bugs have been fixed, which were also addressed with 3 free patches and these fixes are included in 4.2.
