For New Users: Registering Software

If you have never used previous versions of this software, you will need to register it the first time you open it. If you are already a user of this software, you have already registered your copy and will not need to do this again. You can register the software with the assistance of APH staff or by doing it yourself on your Sendero Account Page. We recommend that you register the software through APH because this is the quickest and easiest method.

The first time you open the program, the software will begin the registration process by looking for the flash drive that contains the Software Account ID. This ID is contained in a file called UserId.key on the route of the flash drive. If you insert the flash drive into a USB port before you open the software for the first time, the software will locate the Software Account ID. You will be presented with the Software Registration Screen with empty fields for your name, a password, and the License Key. The User ID Field will already be filled in because the software has obtained it from the flash drive. Screen reader users can tab between these fields. The Software Registration Screen also includes a brief explanation of the two methods for registering the software: calling APH Customer Service or setting up an account on the Sendero website.

If your flash drive is not in the computer when you open the software for the first time, you will see the following message on the screen: "Registration ID: Unable to find your Account ID. Please insert your thumb drive with the maps into your computer, or enter your Account ID below." Below this message, you will find a form field for the Software Account ID, an OK Button to activate after you have inserted the flash drive into your computer or have manually typed the Software Account ID into its field, and a Cancel Button to activate if you wish to cancel the registration process. When you insert your flash drive into a USB port and activate the OK Button, the software will obtain the Software Account ID from the flash drive and will display the registration screen as described above. If the software does not insert the Software Account ID into its field, call APH Customer Service at (800) 223-1839.

Registering Software With the Help of APH Customer Service Staff

To register the software with the help of APH staff, do the following:

  • Insert the Maps flash drive into a USB port on your computer. Some computers may show a Dialog explaining that a new device has been found; if you see this Dialog, activate the OK Button and the Dialog will disappear. Some computers may show a list of actions and ask which action should be performed for the flash drive; close this Dialog by pressing the Escape Key or activating the Cancel Button.

  • Open the software using the APH Talking PC Maps icon on your desktop or in the Start Menu. The Software Registration Screen is displayed.

  • The registration screen includes the following fields and buttons:

    • User ID: This field contains your Software Account ID, the unique alphanumeric string that identifies your software. The ID begins with the letters APH and includes a total of 17 characters. The software obtains this number from a file on your flash drive called UserId.key. You will need to give this ID to APH Customer Service staff in order to register the software.

    • Password: This field is where you will type the password for your Maps account that you create when you speak with APH Customer Service staff.

    • License Key: This field is where you will type the License Key that you obtain from APH Customer Service staff.

    • OK Button: Activate this button when you have provided all required information on this screen.

    • Cancel Button: Activate this button if you wish to cancel the registration process.

  • Call the APH toll-free Customer Service number, (800) 223-1839 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Give the APH Customer Service representative the 17 character Software Account ID in the User ID box on the Software Registration Screen. The APH representative will create an account for you on the Sendero website. You will provide a valid email address and a password for this account. Type the password in the Password Field on the Software Registration Screen. Make sure you type the password exactly as you stated it to the APH representative. Passwords are case sensitive; make sure that you capitalize in the same way as you did when giving the password to APH staff. Record your password where you can locate it for future reference.

  • The APH representative will give you a License Key. Enter this into the License Key Field on the Software Registration Screen.

  • Activate the OK Button on the Software Registration Screen. You will receive a message that the software has been registered.

Registering Software Without APH Assistance

If you wish to register the software without the help of APH staff, you must have access to the Internet. However, you do not need Internet access on the computer where the software is installed. To register the software, do the following:

  • Insert the Maps flash drive into a USB port on the computer on which you have installed the Maps software.

  • Open the software using the APH Talking PC Maps icon on the desktop or in the Start Menu. The Software Registration Screen is displayed.

  • The Software Registration Screen includes the following fields and buttons:

    • User ID: This field contains the identification number for your software, your Software Account ID. This ID begins with the letters APH and includes a total of 17 characters. The software obtains this ID from a file on your flash drive called UserId.key. You will need to copy this ID to a field on your Sendero Account Page.

    • Password: This field is where you will type the password for your Maps account that you will create on your Sendero Account Page.

    • License Key: This field is where you will type the License Key that you will obtain from your Sendero Account Page.

    • OK Button: Activate this button when you have provided all required information on this screen.

    • Cancel Button: Activate this button if you wish to cancel the registration process.

  • Go to http://www.gosendero.com and type the ID from the User ID Field on the Software Registration Screen into the Software Account ID or Serial Number Field on this Sendero webpage. Activate the Login Button. Do not type a password in the Password Field.

  • You will be taken to the Sendero GPS Update Customer Information Screen. Type your name in the Name Field. Type a password in the New Password Field. Retype this password in the Verify New Password Field. Write down your password in a safe place for future use; you will need to enter it on the Software Registration Screen just like you entered it on the Sendero Group website. Passwords are case sensitive; when recording your password, make sure that you capitalize your password in the same way as you do on the Sendero Group website.

  • Activate the Update Button. You will be taken to the Sendero GPS Download Screen. This screen allows you to change your account information (password, name, or email address) and obtain your License Key. You can also download the software that you have purchased. Since you have already done this, you do not need to download anything from this webpage at this time. Locate the License Key heading and copy your 12-digit License Key from the webpage into the License Key Field on the Software Registration Screen.

  • Type the password you created on your Sendero Account Page into the Password Field on the Software Registration Screen. Information should now be filled in for all fields on the Software Registration Screen.

  • Activate the OK Button on the Software Registration Screen. You will receive a message that the software has been registered.

  • If you cannot connect to the Internet with the computer on which you have installed the Maps software, we recommend that you call APH Customer Service at (800) 223-1839. As noted previously, after you provide APH staff with the ID in the User ID Field on the Software Registration Screen, APH staff will set up your Sendero Account. Fill in the email address and password that you gave APH staff for your Sendero Account on the Software Registration Screen. Then fill in the software license provided to you by APH staff.

  • If you don't want assistance from APH, you can set up your Sendero Account on another computer that can connect to the Internet. Write down the email address and password that you used when setting up this account. Also write down the License Key provided to you on the Sendero GPS Download Screen. Bring this information to the computer on which you have installed the software. Insert the flash drive into the computer, and open APH Talking PC Maps. Copy your password and License Key into the appropriate fields on the Software Registration Screen, and activate the OK Button.

Downloading and Installing Maps and Points of Interest

After installing and activating the software, you must install the digital maps that you want to use. As noted previously, your flash drive includes older digital maps that will not work with your new software. You must download and use newer maps and POIs released in 2013.

After your maps software is activated, you will receive a message asking if you want to check for map updates. If you have an Internet connection, press the Yes Button. We highly recommend that you download your maps in this way because it is easy and requires no monitoring on your part. If you don't have an Internet connection, press the No Button. You will then be asked if you want to install maps from your flash drive. Activate the No Button. If the computer on which you have installed the software does not have an Internet connection, you can download the latest digital maps from http://www.gosendero.com on a computer with an Internet connection. You can save the maps on your flash drive or other portable storage device, connect this storage device to the computer with the maps software, and install them using the Install Previously Downloaded Maps and POIs Item on the Help Menu. These two ways of downloading and installing maps are described in detail below.

Automated Download and Installation of Maps and POIs

If you indicated that you wanted to check for map updates after software was registered, the software will automatically go to the Sendero Group website and display all maps and POI files available for you to download. First, the software will announce "checking for Updates." You will then hear a chime ring several times while the software accesses the web site. Tab between items on this screen as follows:

  • Event Log: This is a read only edit area where you are given the status of what is going on. You may see the number of updates available or the name of the Map or user submitted POI that is currently being downloaded.

  • Maps: Arrow through the maps and press Space to select the ones you want. The first nine items provide maps by region (e.g., Southeast or Great Lakes). The remaining items provide maps by state, Canadian province, and Off Shore Island. You can select the region that you live in, a series of regions, and/or states and provinces.

  • User-submitted POIs: Users of Sendero Maps and GPS products and users of APH Talking PC Maps can submit Points of Interest that they create to the Sendero site. Arrow through the list and select those that you want to download and install.

  • Install Programs: If an upgrade to the software that manages the maps exists, it will be shown in this field. You will be instructed about obtaining the upgrade here as well. If the upgrade is free, it will show up in this field as an available download. Otherwise, you will be directed to contact APH Customer Service about purchasing it.

  • GTFS POIs: This is a list of transit feeds by Google. They are additional bus stops for those cities that put their transit bus stops into the GTFS standard format. Use your arrow keys to scroll up and down the list. Press the spacebar to select or unselect one or more of the offered GTFS feeds.

  • Update Button: Press this button when you have selected all of the items that you wish to download and install. Remember that maps are large files and download slowly. Your screen reader will announce each item as it is being downloaded even when you are working in other programs.

Other buttons on this screen are discussed more fully in the User's Guide available through the software Help Menu. After you have selected all of the maps and other items you wish to download, tab to and press the Update Button. Maps software will download all of the items you have selected and announce the name of the item it is downloading, even though you may be doing other things on the computer. Maps software will automatically install the items you have selected when the total download is complete. You MUST NOT turn off your computer or close APH Talking PC Maps while items are being downloaded and installed.

Manual Download and Installation of Maps and POIs

As noted previously, your flash drive includes older maps and Points of Interest that cannot be used with the 2013 software. If the computer on which the software is installed does not have an Internet connection, you cannot use the Automatic Download feature in the software to obtain maps and POIs. You will need to use another computer to download maps and POI files onto portable storage media such as a flash drive or SD card and then use this portable media to install these files onto the computer running the software.

If you would like to store 2013 maps on your flash drive, you must first delete the old map files so that there will be room to hold the new ones. Insert the flash drive into a USB port. Open the flash drive and open the folder called Maps. Delete all files in the Maps folder. This process may take a few minutes because you are deleting more than 60 large files.

Log into your Sendero Account at http://www.gosendero.com. Under the Maps heading, you will find maps categorized by region and then listed separately for each state. Download the regions or states that you want into the Maps folder on the flash drive or onto another portable storage device. Then review the types of POI files and download those that you would like to use onto the portable storage media.

After inserting the portable storage device into a USB port of the computer running APH Talking PC Maps, open the software and select the Install Previously Updated Maps and POIs Item on the Help Menu. The Maps Utility is displayed. Screen reader users can tab between fields in this utility. This utility includes the following lists and controls:

  • Select Maps to Install: This is a Multi-Select List Box including a list of all maps you have downloaded. Screen reader users will hear the name of the next map preceded by the words "Not Selected" if the map has not been selected each time they arrow down or up. Arrow or scroll through this list, and press Spacebar or click on the maps you want to select.

  • Number of Maps Selected: This is a read-only field displaying the number of maps selected for installation.

  • List of Currently Installed Maps: This is a list of maps that are already installed in the current maps folder.

  • Select All Button: This button selects all maps for installation.

  • Unselect All Button: This button unselects all selected maps, leaving no maps selected.

  • Install Maps Button: When activated, this button installs selected all maps.

  • Cancel Button: This button cancels the map installation.

Other buttons on this screen are discussed more fully in the User's Guide available through the software Help Menu. After you have selected the maps that you want to install and have activated the OK Button, the utility will unzip map files and install them on your computer.
